Finding your Portuguese Ancestors: A Genealogy Workshop

This workshop will teach you how to research your family tree using sources from the United States, Portugal and Cape Verde.

Cheri Mello of California is an author, lecturer, chat room host and DNA project participant.

George Pacheco of Rhode Island is a lecturer and researcher associated with the Family History Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Dartmouth, MA.

Workshop fee is $20, payable to the Claire T. Carney Library. Lunch and workshop materials are included. Pre-registration is required.

The Associates will hold an election of officers and present their annual gift to Claire T. Carney Library for the purchase of library materials.

Ms. Cummings holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in French Language and Literature and a Master’s of Science Degree in Education from Indiana University, Bloomington. She has extensive experience in college and university residential education, judicial affairs, and crisis management. She has served as a consultant to higher education institutions, public school systems, and community organizations on issues of multiculturalism and diversity. The annual meeting is open to the public.

A dessert reception will follow the program.

Local poets joining us to read their poetry are Ada Jill Schneider, Marc Widershien and Karen Klein.

There will award prizes to the three best poems written by the children, refreshments and a book of the poems available to all. Parking available in lot 13.

UMass Dartmouth Claire T. Carney Library Associates present Ryan Cooper as part of the Celebrating Our Archival Lifelines series.

Ryan Cooper will speak about his correspondence with Otto Frank. At the age of 27 he forged a relationship with Otto Frank, Anne Frank’s father. In 1973 Ryan Cooper first met Otto Frank, then 84 and living in Basel Switzerland.

The presentation is from 6 – 8 p.m. in the Library Browsing Area. There will be a tour of the new library archives space on the ground floor followed by a talk in the library browsing area.

Celebrating British Theater Lifelines: “That’s Entertainment” a one-woman show with celebrated English actress, Thelma Ruby.
Thelma has appeared in numerous London theater productions including, Fiddler on the Roof, Cabaret, Stop the World I  Want to Get Off, and many more.

Copies of her book, DOUBLE OR NOTHING: A JOINT AUTOBIOGRAPHY by Thelma Ruby and Peter Frye will be available.

Celebrating Our Archival Lifelines: Tales of 6 Women:  is a collaborative work by Ada Schneider, Barbara Shore, Linda Monchik, Cindy Yoken, and Judy Yoken.

The performance is edited and directed by Linda Monchik. These oral histories are taken from interviews of leading Jewish women in New Bedford and Fall River over the past 20 years.

A bagel and nosh reception precedes the program.

The Claire T. Carney Library Associates are hosting an Heirloom Discovery Day at UMass Dartmouth, 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA.

The event will be Sunday, March 30 at 2-4:30 p.m. in the Claire T. Carney library browsing area.

Senior appraiser Francis H. McNamee of the Marion Antique Shop and Paula Dean, who appraises jewelry and collectibles, will be featured.

• Each appraisal will be $5 payable at the door.
• There is a three item limit.
• Bring portable items and photographs of items that are too heavy to carry in.
• Do not bring coins, books or stamps.
