Library Orientation for Students in Fully-Online Programs – Two days – February 19th & 22nd

Librarians at Claire T. Carney Library are offering an orientation to online library services. Sign up for one of two sessions designed especially for students in online programs. Find out how the Carney Library’s staff and resources can help you succeed. The orientation will cover key library services, including the library’s new Primo discovery search, free home delivery of books and electronic delivery of articles, registration for a library card/university ID, and the availability of research help and technical support (read samples of student feedback).

The orientation sessions are scheduled for Tuesday February 19th from 6 to 6:45 pm and Friday, February 22nd from 10 to 10:45 am. The sessions will be conducted using Wimba, an online teaching and learning tool. We will email attendees the link to the Wimba classroom and directions for accessing it.

If you’re interested in attending one of the sessions, please complete the online registration form by Monday, February 18th.

Technical Requirements

  • Windows 7, Vista, or XP; Mac OSX 10.4+
  • 256 MB RAM
  • IE 7.0+, Safari 3.0+, Firefox 3.0+ (Browser must be Java and JavaScript enabled)

You need speakers or a headset to listen to the presentation. We also recommend that you have a microphone to ask questions and make comments. If you don’t have a microphone, you may use Wimba’s text-based chat to communicate with the presenters and fellow participants.

We recommend that you use a broadband connection or higher. Dial-up and wireless may not provide an uninterupted connection.

Library Instruction - UMass Dartmouth LibraryThe Claire T. Carney Library is offering sessions for transfer students who wish to learn about services and resources. Freshmen get an introduction to the library in first year English classes. This is your opportunity.

All classes will be held in the Claire T. Carney Library‘s 2nd floor classroom, room 225.

Sessions will be led by Linda Zieper.

While these sessions are geared to transfer students, anyone may sign up.

RefWorks Workshops – An easier way to organize research & format citations – RSVP NOW!

RefWorks Workshops at the Claire T. Carney Library

RefWorks allows you to create your own database of references. You may then use those references in a bibliography or you may cite references in your paper and RefWorks will format your paper and bibliography in any style that you choose.

The Claire T. Carney Library is offering sessions to help beginners and advanced users. All sessions will meet in the Library’s second floor classroom room 225. These sessions are open to both students and faculty. Bring your laptop if you’d like to set up RefWorks on your own computer.

  • How to open an account
  • Basic citation importation
  • How to create and organize folders in your account
  • How to link to your paper in MSWord
  • How to create a basic bibliography

Advanced sessions will focus on:

  • Importing from other sources (web pages, RSS feeds, and other commercial databases
  • Editing references
  • More viewing and sorting options
  • Checking for duplicates
  • Troubleshooting problems

“A Faculty Senate/Carney Library Brown Bag Lecture series Presentation”

Faculty are probably familiar with the term “information literacy.”  It appears frequently in discussions of standards, especially NEASC standards, and in relation to life-long learning. Librarians use these standards with your students.

This Brown Bag session is the first open meeting of a departmental seminar series, funded by the Provost.

Led by Kari Mofford , this session will introduce the series and will focus on information literacy standards and learning outcomes.  Faculty participants in the seminar series will explore practical activities to integrate information literacy into their own courses and ways to encourage better student research projects.
