Isn’t it fantastic? Construction of the expanded and renovated library is underway!

Construction of the expanded and renovated library is underway!

Services, collections and staff have been consolidated to floors 1-3 and a portion of the lower level. A new temporary entrance has been created on the first floor. During construction, there will be some inconvenience but we are doing everything possible to minimize it under the circumstances. There will be several phases of construction.  Services, collections and staff will be relocated during each of these phases. The end result will be a state of the art facility at the heart of the campus. Expected completion is set for Fall 2012.

SUBJECT: Claire T. Carney Library Addition & Renovations

During the week of May 23, 2011 the following activities are anticipated
to commence:

– The contractor will begin building a new temporary first floor entrance
to the Claire T. Carney Library which will be located facing the quad at the
end of the current circulation desk area. This entrance will be fully ADA

The library renovation is underway!

As reported on the campus UMDNotify listserv – April 11, 2011:

The library renovation is underway!  In order to prepare for the renovation
and expansion, we need to move some things around.  Furniture will be moved
to provide space for more books on the 1st floor.   Some tables and chairs
will be removed from the lower level to provide a staging area for the book
movers.  The computer labs will remain open for business.  Activity in the
lower level and at the loading dock will increase.  This will become a very
high traffic area for a few weeks.

The library collections move will start on Tuesday April 12.  There will be
activity on all levels of the building and at the law school.  There will be
some disruption to normal traffic flow and elevator use.  A core collection
of books will be relocated to the first and second floors. Another
collection of books will be moved to the law library (mainly call numbers
starting with HV, J and K).  Other books will be moved to off site storage.
The journal collection will remain on the 3rd floor until later in the year.

We understand that there will be some disruption and inconvenience but the
end result will be well worth it.  The new and renovated library will be
spectacular.

Books on the Move – April 2011 – The library construction and renovation project is underway

The library construction and renovation project is underway.  There was a temporary delay for a redesign issue, but we are now back on track.

In April, the core book collection will be relocated to shelving on the 1st and 2nd floors.  The UMassd Law Library will also hold some books from the Claire T. Carney Library for the duration of the construction project.  All of these books will be available for browsing and borrowing.  The remainder of the book collection will be moved to off site storage for the duration of the project.  The last day when the entire collection will be available in the Claire T. Carney Library building is April 3, 2011.

A careful selection process was conducted to keep the most requested books here on campus.  Interlibrary loan,  virtual catalog and other services will be available to meet your book borrowing needs for items that are not available here.   Every effort will be made to meets these needs as quickly as possible.

The journal collection will remain in the library in its entirety until late in the fall 2011 semester when the building project will move to its next phase.  Again, the most used print journals will remain in the building while others are removed to storage while the renovation is underway.

We realize that this is a change in the way we do business, but it is a necessary step in creating the new Claire T. Carney Library building.  We appreciate your patience and understanding during this process.

Collaborative Work Station Furniture Survey – Come Try It and Rate It!

The Claire T. Carney Library is hosting a trial of a collaborative work station for possible use in the renovated building.  It allows up to 6 people to each bring their own laptop to the station and share information on 2 screens. This can make group work and collaboration quick and seamless.  It is a walk up and connect experience with no special software necessary.  Find some colleagues and bring your laptops and give it a test drive.

The station is located on the 1st floor of the library in the Browsing area.  It will be here until February 27.  Please complete a survey form and leave it at the Learning Commons desk.  Your feedback is important.

For more information or questions, please contact Catherine Fortier-Barnes, cfortier@umassd.edu, Ext 8665 or Dean Terry Burton, tburton@umassd.edu, Ext 8664.
