RefWorks Workshops – An easier way to organize research & format citations – RSVP NOW!

The Library is offering sessions to help beginners and advanced users. All sessions will meet in the Library’s second floor conference room (just behind the elevator). These sessions are open to both students and faculty.

Each session can have 6 participants, so RSVP quickly to get a spot!

If you have a laptop with wireless access, please bring it!

RefWorks allows you to create your own database of references. You may then use those references in a bibliography or you may cite references in your paper and RefWorks will format your paper and bibliography in any style that you choose.

Beginners will learn:

How to open an account
Basic citation importation
How to create and organize folders in your account
How to link to your paper in MSWord
How to create a basic bibliography

Advanced sessions will focus on:

Importing from other sources (web pages, RSS feeds, and other commercial databases)
Editing references
More viewing and sorting options
Checking for duplicates
Troubleshooting problems

Learning Commons to open at the Claire T. Carney Library

The Learning Commons at the Claire T. Carney Library will open on the first day of the spring semester, January 26.

The Learning Commons, or LC, integrates library, technology, and academic support services for students, faculty, and staff. A cross-campus collaborative effort, the LC will be administered by the Division of Library Services, Information Resources and Technology with a campus-wide advisory group.

The first-floor LC is designed for undergraduates to study, write papers, prepare presentations for class, collaborate with groups, do library research, and get help with technology. Service Desk staff can assist with a variety of questions, from library and reference resources to technology services such as COIN, email, and support for software applications. Students can meet with tutors from the Writing & Reading Center in the evenings for help with writing papers. As the LC develops, additional support services will be offered.

The Scholarly Commons on the library second floor is designed for faculty and students engaged in advanced research. Reference librarians will provide expert assistance and instruction in the identification, evaluation, and use of information resources. The Center for Teaching Excellence is also located within the Scholarly Commons.

Two LC Training and Computer Classrooms on the lower level of the library are available for classes and campus-wide training and professional development.

The LC will be open during regular library hours, with additional 24×7 access during study and exam periods. The lower-level computer classrooms will be accessible for student use during peak study times.

As the university plans for the future expansion and renovation of the Claire T. Carney Library, the opening of the Learning Commons represents a major step in the ongoing mission to provide integrated library, technology, and academic support services for students, faculty, and staff.

NOTICE: Library online catalog Voyager unavailable Jan. 19th & 20th due to System Upgrade

The library’s online catalog Voyager is going to be upgraded to the latest system version on Monday, January 19th and Tuesday, January 20th.

During this time the library catalog will not be available. Other services that must access the catalog and system for data, such as the BLC and Massachusetts Virtual Catalogs, will also be unavailable.

Please note that the library web site, access to electronic databases, the Journal Locator, and other online services will remain available and continue to function.

The upgrade will provide a newly designed interface along with other features developed to enhance research.

We apologize for any inconvenience that may be caused by this upgrade and thank you for your co-operation.

UMass Dartmouth is now a member of the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR)

UMass Dartmouth is now a member of the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR). Membership provides access to a vast archive of data sets in the social sciences as well as health and business, and offers us discounted tuition rates and travel stipends for courses in ICPSR’s Summer Program in Quantitative Methods.

Membership is funded through research indirect funds that are allocated to the Library Services, Information Resources, and Technology Division. ICPSR is accessible from the Claire T. Carney Library’s Articles & Databases page. Dr. Heidi Berggren is the Official Representative for UMass Dartmouth.”
